Skid Steer Loader Fatality
The HSE have highlighted the fatality of a skid steer loader operator who was crushed by the lift arm of the vehicle.
This alert by the HSE stresses the need for adequate training for all maintenance staff and operators as well as the need to test, inspect and maintain interlocks. These interlocks have been installed by the manufacturers as a safeguard against this kind of accident which is usually achieved by the operator raising a restraint bar or arm rest which is linked to the machines hydraulic circuit.Defective interlocks, when combined with unsafe operating practices can potentially result in serious injury or death to operators and others in the vicinity of the machine.
Training as well as maintenance of such equipment is of great importance as even on an adequately maintained machine an accident can occur.
Lantra Awards offer an integrated training and assessment course for Skid Steer Loader of between one and three days duration. Typically for a maximum of two people with one machine and four with two machines.
