KNW highlight the need for suitable training in the use of ATVs
The HSE are reminding employers of those using All Terrain Vehicles of the importance of wearing a protective helmet and the provision of suitable training in the correct use of the vehicle and the ensuring the vehicle is well maintained.
There have been many accidents over the years and some have resulted in fatality. In 2007 a farm worker was involved in an ATV accident and received fatal head injuries after losing control of the ATV and crashing into a tree.
He was not wearing a helmet.
The deceased had never driven an ATV before and had not received any formal training. Not only was he not wearing a helmet but it was later found that the ATV had several defects including incorrect tyre pressure which is critical for the safe use of an ATV, four worn tyres and ineffective rear brakes.
The employer was subsequently fined £6,650
