Excavators used for Lifting Operations
New course available - For many years KNW has trained our clients in the use of various forms of excavators during that time the use of excavators as cranes or lifting devices was never covered.
Recently the HSE have become aware of the number of accidents caused by such usage and an increasing number of near misses have also been recorded.
Whilst the basic advice still remains that the use of excavators as crane/ lifting equipment is not its primary design function; we are well aware of the fact that many of our clients do use their excavators in this fashion.
Therefore following discussions with the HSE and Lantra Awards Limited, KNW have combined with Lantra Awards Limited to produce a course endorsement to their excavator training. This is designed to provide as much safety as possible when excvators are used in this manner.
This course endorsement is a 1 day refresher course for 4 delegates specifically for use of the use of excavators as cranes. It is only available to delegates who hold current Lantra certification for use of the excavator concerned.
The course has been designed to allow operators to manage the risk incurred in using excavators for these activities and will include elements of :-
- Procedures and code of practice;
- Team working and Communications (Slinger signalling);
- Prelift checks and Lifting Plans;
- Consideration and Calculation of lifting radii to establish safe loads;
- Awareness of the differences between machines and various lifting accessories;
- Identifying Hazards;
- Travelling with a load and load disconnection procedures.
All candidates will be subjected to a theory test and will have to demonstrate competency during practical testing.
